自己紹介
津田塾大学英文科で、英語・言語学を勉強しました。そこで、J. L. Austin の Speech Act Theory（言語行為理論）にであいました。Austin の本 How to do things with words（『言語と行為』）を苦労して読む中で、この理論を追っていけばいいということを確信しました。英語力という制約があったはずなのになぜそう思ったかは今でもわかりませんが、大切なものに出会ったという感じでした。Austin の理論に対する確信はまだゆらいでいません。津田塾大学英文科博士課程前期（一般にいう修士課程）に入って、勉強を続けました。
津田塾大学博士課程後期（一般にいう博士課程）のときに英国Edinburgh University に留学しました。最初は１年のコースをやるつもりでしたが、しっかり研究をしたくて Ph.D. (博士）コースに入りました。そこで、学者としての研究の仕方をたたき込まれました。学問の厳しさを知りました。本当に大変でしたが、大切なものを身につけた感じです。1999年に Ph.D. （博士号）を Edinburgh University で取りました。
講義・演習
コミュニケーション概論
●授業のねらい
コミュニケーションで伝えられるいろいろな意味を言語学、記号学の枠組みの中で説明していく。その中で、私たちが言語・記号を使って表している意味とはどういうものなのか、また、そういう意味が今までの理論の中でどう説明されてきたかを明らかにしていく。前半は言語学の視点から、後半は記号学、コミュニケーションの視点から意味の問題を考えていく。
●授業計画
講義は「意味論」から始め、語・文とそれらが表すものの関係を分析する。そこでは、いろいろな語・文とそれらが表す意味の関係を扱う。そこから、さらに、語・文の意味としては捉えきれない意味を「語用論」の意味として扱う。後半は、言語によって表される意味に限らず、記号によって表される意味一般を扱う。記号と意味の様々な関係、また、これらの関係を説明しようとした言語学的、記号学的モデルを紹介していく。最後にノンバーバル・コミュニケーションにかかわる問題を扱う。
コミュニケーション基礎演習
●授業のねらい
この授業では、ジェンダー（「性」）を題材にして言語と社会の相互関係の問題を考えていきます。まず、「言語とそれが表すものの関係は『自然』な関係ではない」という話しから始めます。そこでは、サピア／ウォーフの仮設（言語相対論）に代表される言語の見方が説明されます。そこから、ジェンダー問題に入り、「男性」「女性」というジェンダーが言語や社会の中でどう作られていくかを考えていきます。
●授業計画
まず、(1)男性名詞、女性名詞、また、それらがどう使われるのか、という「言語的」な問題、そして、(2)ある特定の言葉によって暗に示される社会規範、社会的通年としてのジェンダー（「性」）という「言語・社会的」問題、を扱います。さらに、ジェンダー問題に限らず、「言語化・社会通念化される違い」とは何なのかという問題を考えていきます。
コミュニケーション基礎演習a
●授業のねらい
この授業では、語用論（pragmatics）とメタ語用論（meta pragmatics）を扱います。語用論では、言語がコミュニケーションでどう使われるかという問題を、特に、コンテクスト（context）、言語行為（speech acts）、会話分析（conversation analysis）を扱いながら、考えていきます。メタ語用論では、言語がコミュニケーションでどう使われているかという問題を、個々の例、個々の言語ではなく、もう少し抽象的な言語使用の一般性の問題として扱います。メタ語用論では、語用論的行為（pragmatics acts）、文学的語用論（literary pragmatics）、文化を越えた語用論（pragmatics across cultures）、語用論の社会面（social aspects of pragmatics）などを扱います。
●授業計画
まず、語用論（pragmatics）がどのような分野なのかを、意味論(semantics)との違いや、語用論（pragmatics）定義の議論などの中からつかんでいきます。そして、含意（implicature）、言語行為（speech acts）、直示（deixis）などの問題を扱っていく。さらに、メタ語用論（meta pragmatics）の問題へと議論を発展させていきます。
卒業研究演習
言語学、コミュニケーションの分野で、問題になっている様々な面を、Journal of Pragmatics , Linguistics and Philosophyなどの雑誌の論文を読み、考えていきます。
